
Why Outdoor Heaters Actually Die (And How We Fixed It)
Here is a little industry secret: most IP65 outdoor heaters don’t fail because the heating element burns out. That’s rarely the problem. Instead, they die right where the lead-wire meets the heater. When you put a heater outside, it’s fighting a constant war. You’ve got extreme heat on one side and rain or humidity on the other. That cycle just shreds cheap insulation.
The problem with “basic” seals
A lot of companies just throw in a rubber gasket or a bit of silicone and call it a day. But here’s the thing—infrared emitters get hot. Really hot. That heat makes standard rubber brittle. It cracks. Once there’s a tiny crack, water doesn’t just sit there. It gets sucked right into the connection point through capillary action. Then you get oxidation, a short circuit, and a dead heater. We do things differently. We don’t just “plug” the wire in; we use high-temperature potting compounds and compression seals to lock the lead-wire into the housing. It creates a solid wall that water simply can’t get past.
Keeping the sparks where they belong
Ever had a heater trip the breaker during a storm? That usually happens because the wire jacket “burned out” near the heat source. If the wire isn’t built for the actual temperature of the lamp, it turns brittle and snaps. Water gets in. The unit shorts. It’s a mess. To stop this, we use fluorine-based or glass-fiber braided wiring. These materials can handle the “heat soak” without breaking a sweat. When you pair that with a precision-molded enclosure, the electricity stays exactly where it should be—inside the wire and away from the rain.
The honest trade-off
I’ll be straight with you: making a seal this tight comes with one downside. It makes field repairs a bit tougher. Because the wires are potted (basically encased in a hard, waterproof block), you can’t just strip a wire and splice it back together if it gets accidentally cut during installation. You’ll need to replace the whole lead assembly. It’s a choice we made on purpose. You lose the ability to do a quick “hack” repair in the field, but you gain a heater that won’t quit on you the moment the weather turns.
