
Why We Obsess Over Dielectric Testing for Ozone-Free IR Lamps
If you’re working in a clean room or packaging food, you probably already know why ozone-free infrared lamps are the way to go. They cut out that 185nm wavelength so you don’t end up with ozone gas hanging around your workspace. But here’s the thing: while everyone talks about the light spectrum, the real deal-breaker is the electrical guts of the lamp. Specifically, the quartz envelope and the lead-in wires. If those aren’t perfect, your lamp might not even survive the first time you flip the switch.
The nightmare of insulation failure
High-wattage IR lamps live in a world of extreme heat. It’s brutal. That’s why we don’t do “random sampling” here. We don’t just test a few lamps from the batch and hope for the best.**We test every single tube.**Every one. We run 100% voltage withstand (hi-pot) and insulation resistance tests before anything leaves our floor. Why go to all that trouble? Because a tiny, microscopic crack in the quartz or a messy seal at the pinch point can cause an arc-over. Power vs. Safety
Working with ozone-free quartz means we have to be incredibly picky about material purity. Even a tiny bit of impurity in the glass can create a path for electricity to leak once the lamp gets hot. We track that leakage current closely to make sure the insulation stays rock solid under a full load. Now, a quick heads-up: our lamps leave here in top shape, but what happens next is up to you. If your reflectors get coated in dust or oil, heat builds up. That heat can eat away at the insulation on your connecting wires. The lamp itself is built for safety, but you’ve got to keep the airflow moving so those terminals don’t overheat. We hand over the test reports so you can plug these into your gear and just… relax. No guessing games about grounding or worrying about short circuits. It just works.
