Stop Shivering in Your Bathroom
Most bathroom heaters are pretty primitive. You walk in, flip a switch, and then stand there shivering for five minutes while the room slowly warms up. It’s annoying. We’re changing that by hooking up short-wave infrared (IR) arrays to your smart home setup—think Zigbee or Wi-Fi. The goal? You can trigger the heat from your bed or the kitchen, so the room is actually warm by the time you step inside.
Heat That Actually Hits You
Here is the cool part: IR doesn’t waste time trying to heat up all the air in the room. Instead, it sends heat directly to your skin. We use quartz tubes filled with halogen gas because they get hot in seconds. When you tap a button on your phone or tell your voice assistant to turn it on, the power clicks over and you feel the warmth almost instantly. No waiting around for a clunky heat exchanger to wake up. It’s just… warm.
The Tech Under the Hood
To make this happen, we have to bridge the gap between a high-power heater and a low-power smart controller. We use a smart relay or a TRIAC dimmer to handle the heavy lifting. You can even set it up with different power levels. Use a low setting just to keep the chill away, or crank it up to “high” for those brutal winter mornings when you need a blast of heat to actually get moving. One heads-up: if you’re pushing 2000W or more, don’t cheap out on the wiring. You need a heavy-duty relay. If you use a flimsy switch, you’ll end up with “contact welding,” which is a fancy way of saying your switch is permanently stuck or broken.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Instant heat is great, but it has its quirks. These lamps pull a lot of power the second they kick in. If you hook too many of them to one smart hub without balancing the load, you’re probably going to trip your breaker. Not a great way to start your morning. Also, be smart about where you put your sensors. If the sensor is sitting right in the line of fire of the IR beam, it’ll think the room is a sauna and shut the system off way too early. Keep the sensor tucked away, and you’re golden.
