If you’ve ever put an infrared heater on a porch or a semi-outdoor deck, you know the struggle. You buy a nice unit, use it for a season or two, and then—boom. It just stops working. Most of the time, it’s not because the heater was “cheap.” It’s because the outdoors is brutal on electronics. Moisture, humidity, and the occasional rain splash are basically death sentences for most heaters. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we built ours to actually survive the elements.
The battle against “the fog”
Here is the thing about humid patios: when your heater clicks on and off, the temperature swings create condensation inside the machine. It’s like a tiny rainstorm happening right on your circuit board. That “fogging” leads to corrosion and short circuits. It’s a slow kill. To stop this, we use sealed housings and anti-fog coatings. We basically wrap the guts of the heater in a protective layer to keep the dampness away from the wiring. It means you aren’t fighting creeping rust every time the weather shifts.
Dealing with splashes
Then there’s the rain. Or the guy with the power washer cleaning the deck. A standard heater isn’t ready for that. If water drips onto a scorching hot quartz tube, the glass can literally crack from the thermal shock. Not great. We use gaskets and sealed casings to make the hardware splash-proof. Instead of letting water seep into the power supply, our housing pushes the water away from the parts that actually matter. It’s simple, but it saves the unit.
The trade-off
Now, full disclosure: adding all this protection makes the unit a bit heavier. It also means the airflow isn’t quite as open as some of those flimsy, frame-only designs. Because of that extra weight, just make sure your mounting brackets are sturdy enough to handle it. But honestly? It’s a trade I’d make every single time. I’d rather have a slightly heavier heater that actually works in year three than a lightweight one that I have to tear down and replace every spring.
