Let’s be honest about semi-fab clean rooms. They’re energy hogs. For a long time, we’ve just accepted that we have to heat the entire room volume just to get a few wafers up to temperature. It’s wasteful, and frankly, it’s a bit ridiculous. That’s why we’ve been leaning into infrared (IR) heating. Instead of trying to warm up all that empty air, we just point the heat exactly where it needs to go—the wafers and the components. It’s a simple switch, but it cuts the kilowatt-hour draw per wafer significantly. Getting the heat where it actually matters Here is the thing about IR: it uses radiation, not air. You aren’t fighting your HVAC system or trying to manage massive temperature gradients across a tool. We use shorter wavelength lamps because they dig deeper into the substrate. It makes the ramp-up feel almost instant. And when your heating cycles are that fast, your tools aren’t just sitting there idling at high power, wasting money. Fitting power into tight spaces The best part? These lamps pack a huge punch in a tiny footprint. You can usually slide these systems into your existing setup without having to tear apart the chassis or rebuild your floor plan. They’re snappy, too. They click on and off immediately. You don’t get that annoying “over-shoot” you deal with when using resistive heaters, where the temperature keeps climbing after you’ve already hit your target. But, there is a catch. These arrays pull a lot of current the second they kick in. If your cabling or power supplies aren’t up to the task, you’re going to trip breakers right in the middle of a production run. It’s a headache you definitely want to avoid, so double-check your ratings first. The “Green” side of things When you stop heating the air and start heating the product, everything changes. Since less heat is leaking into the clean room, your chillers don’t have to work nearly as hard to keep things cool. You’ll see the electricity bill drop.
