
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random splashes of water, and temperatures that jump from freezing to boiling in minutes. If a replacement heating element isn’t built for that kind of chaos, the seals give out. Moisture sneaks in, hits the terminals, and—pop—the whole thing shorts out. That’s exactly why we don’t just trust the specs; we put every single batch through a damp-heat aging test.
The problem with “waterproof” seals
You’ll see an IP65 rating on the box, which basically means it can handle dust and water jets. But here’s the thing: a seal that works on day one might not work on day 180. Constant heating and cooling makes materials expand and shrink. We use chambers that simulate years of steam to look for “wicking.” That’s when moisture slowly crawls through a seal like a sponge, heading straight for the internal wiring. If the insulation drops even a little bit, the design fails. Simple as that.
The “breathing” effect
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. When you wrap that heat in a waterproof housing, you create a pressure difference. As the air inside heats up, it pushes out. As it cools, it sucks air back in. It’s basically like the lamp is breathing. If those seals aren’t perfect, the lamp literally inhales humid bathroom air and dumps it right onto the filament and connectors. We cycle our tests to make sure the housing doesn’t crack or leak under that pressure.
Finding the sweet spot
It feels like a contradiction, right? You want the tightest seal possible to keep water out, but if you seal it too tight, you trap the heat. If the heat has nowhere to go, the electrical terminals can actually burn themselves out. We spend a lot of time balancing seal thickness with just enough venting so the lamp doesn’t cook its own circuitry. The result is a replacement that just works. Just make sure your mounting bracket is lined up straight when you install it—you don’t want to put weird mechanical pressure on those seals.
