
Keeping Your IR Heaters Safe in Wet Spots
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or on a wet patio is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. Water and electricity aren’t friends. When steam or a stray splash hits a live wire, you’re looking at a short circuit or a nasty ground fault. The trick is all in how the heater actually connects to the power. The gear that keeps you safe A cheap plastic cover isn’t going to cut it here. We use high-grade ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals. Why? Because ceramics don’t care if they’re soaking wet—they still block the current from jumping from the live wire into the metal frame of the heater. Then there’s the wiring. We stick with silicone-insulated cables. PVC is great for most things, but it cracks when it gets blasted by the heat of an IR lamp over and over. Silicone stays flexible and keeps the copper core bone-dry. Sealing the deal It’s not just about the bulb; it’s about the whole box. We use EPDM or fluorosilicone gaskets to plug every single gap where water could sneak in. If this is going in a shower area, you want something rated IPX4 or IPX5. Basically, it needs to handle a spray without blinking. The connection points are usually where things go wrong. To fix that, we use sealed connectors or “potted” junctions. We basically drown the wire joints in resin. No air gaps, no condensation, no problems. The catch Here’s the thing: when you seal a unit this tightly to keep water out, the heat has nowhere to go. The electronics inside can get pretty toasty. You have to be careful with your thermal fuses. If they aren’t rated for that trapped internal heat, the unit will just keep tripping for no apparent reason. But if you don’t seal it enough, you’re risking a short. It’s a bit of a balancing act to make sure the components don’t burn out prematurely.
